MWSA (Making Women Subservient Again!)

Remember when Virginia Slims told women we'd come a long way? She was wrong.

This week, a NY Times article reported on Turning Point USA’s indoctrination of young women via social media “influencers.” (Not a fan of influencers, btw, since every nitwit with a smartphone and a social media account can be one.)

We all know about the “bros” who catapulted Trump back into the White House for a second term. We see them, we hear them, and they’re in our faces literally every single day waving their freak flags. But this article’s focus was on a recent Young Women’s Leadership Summit event in Dallas, hosted by Turning Point USA and attended by some 3,000 young women in ruffled dresses and cowboy boots wearing pins that read “Dump your socialist boyfriend,” “Make AOC bar tend again,” and “My favorite season is the fall of feminism.” Clearly, a fast growing constituency now targeted by the MAGA movement, which successfully harvested the testosterone driven and is now moving in on fatuous simpletons who undoubtedly will suffer the consequences of their foolishness soon enough. One step forward and a century backward ushered in in the relative blink of an eye.

Those attending this clown circus were drawn to it by conservative women “influencers” whose advice is: start dating seriously, stop eating ultra-processed foods, start taking supplements and stop using birth control. Stop using birth control? Huh? Leave it to the MAGAs to conflate Oscar Meyer with contraception!?!

The willful stupidity of so many young women is infuriating because it ignores the pioneering generations of women who led us into the 21st Century with their blood, sweat and sacrifice - the very women who enabled these young woman to even have a choice. That’s not to say that we live in a world of gender equality. Not even close. But in small increments and over dozens of decades, women have achieved the fullness and richness of life in almost the same way men have enjoyed life pretty much since the beginning of recorded history.

At the event, when Charlie Kirk was asked “what does success look like for the political MAGA movement?” his answer was “we should bring back the celebration of the Mrs. degree. . . .You know who the most miserable and depressed people in America are?" he went on to say, “Career-driven early 30-something women.” Really? And, the message from one of the sponsoring “influencers?” - “Less Prozac, more protein . . ., Less burnout, more babies, less feminism, more femininity.” Silicone, botox, fillers and hair dye apparently do kill brain cells.

So, what does this have to do with the work of LD3 Dems? I have to ask because as contributors to the Newsletter, we’re supposed to write about our experiences as LD3 Dems volunteers. I’m a Field Director for LD3 Dems, but I’m also a “childless cat lady” (what is it with these MAGA guys and cats?) who’s had several decades long careers in male dominated professions - - and I’m so very proud of it. Because it’s progress. Wouldn’t have had it any other way. And I got here on the shoulders of all the brave women who came before me. I wrote this piece because with the fire hose of national crises blasting us every single day, maybe no one is paying attention to the Style section of the NY Times. But with the ongoing brainwashing of young women perhaps that’s one of the places where we can learn about some of the quiet ways in the background in which America and its future are being dismantled by right-wing extremism. After all, if more of us were paying attention to the Sports section, we may have seen the morphing of a generation of rational, sentient young men into an angry, hostile freak show. So, if you read the article and your head doesn’t explode, you haven’t been paying attention.

On August 18th, America (or at least most of it) will celebrate the 105th anniversary of women’s suffrage. Now is not the time to cede our ground to nitwit "influencers" with political agendas who want women barefoot, pregnant, and in the kitchen circa 1950. That’s not the way forward. It’s the antithesis of progress.
